RAYSON-MILLER POST #899

Brick_Dedication_Ceremony_for_Edward_A._Esker_008.jpg

The family of Edward A. Esker asked the Rayson-Miller Post if we could provide a small brick dedication ceremony for Edward who passed away in Florida. Chaplain Jeff Mason, Bugler Norm Johnson (who was a friend of Edward), and myself put on a small ceremony for the family. As always Jeff said the right words to comfort the family and did a solo rendition of "Amazing Grace", and I as Commander gave some opening words of welcome and tribute to Edward (text below).
Brick Dedication Ceremony for Edward A. Esker
July 23, 2010

Edward served during WWII with the Army Air Force out of England, and was a gunner on B-17s.

Today we honor Edward to memorialize his service to our Country during World War II. It seems a brick is a small token for Edward’s service, but this small brick represents much. This small brick, with Edward’s name on it, represents his sacrifice and duty and it will live on as a reminder that Edward was a part of that “greatest generation” who secured our freedoms from those who would take it away. Our gift now to Edward is to remember him as we see his name as part of this Memorial.

On behalf of the members of the Rayson-Miller Post, Edward, we salute you!
Commander Bill Rahn

Retirees and Vets Allowed to Salute Flag

Traditionally, members of the nation's veterans service organizations render the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization's official head-gear. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 contained an amendment to allow un-uniformed servicemembers, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during the hoisting, lowering, or passing of the U.S. flag. A later amendment further authorized hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel. This was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which Former President Bush signed on Oct. 14, 2008.
